At Young Disciples we strive to build on the foundation of faith laid down by family, church and school. We provide sound teaching of the Catholic faith and an environment in which children can make friends with others who share their values. In this way we strengthen the spiritual “legs” needed to stand firm in the faith. Since our members are from Grades 1 through 6 we are always challenged to present the faith in a way that does not overwhelm or bore them but is fun and interactive. This is achieved with compact lessons and related activities such as crafts, games, music, videos and guest speakers. Each evening begins with prayer and song.
Our 3-year program follows the cycles of the church, providing a wide range of topics from the Bible and church feast days. We also study the inspirational lives of the saints. One of our year’s highlights is the annual “All Saints Day Party” where children come dressed up as, and present a favourite saint.
The Young Disciples ministry volunteer positions are an opportunity to grow more in your faith while building community. In fact, Young Disciples is the perfect setting for a whole family’s faith to grow. All of our lesson plans are fortified with plenty of background information for the instructor. While the children are learning at their level, the adults are doing the same.
The children who come back each year say they love the games, crafts and snacks that we serve each night. For them, the fun and fellowship are just as important as their growth in the faith. Our adult members initially join to support their children in a program they see as valuable. However, it is what they learn themselves that takes them by surprise and keeps them coming back! While learning about Jesus and the teachings of his church, they are drawn into a closer relationship with Him.
The nursery is available to all volunteers whose children are too young for the program. We also have various positions available for teens. This truly is a ministry in which an entire family can be involved.
